Mara and her four kittens moved in under our shed the first week of August last year. She wasn’t much more than a kitten herself. She was doing her best, but all five of them were awfully thin. Mara was keeping the kittens clean and free of fleas and taking them on training hunts. But she just wasn’t a good enough hunter herself to keep them fed. We started feeding them and quickly realized that Mara was too friendly to leave in the wild. We trapped her and three of the kittens, but couldn’t catch the fourth kitten. Finally, in desperation after two days, we turned Mara loose. Sure enough, she called in the fourth kitten and brought her to us. The kittens are all adopted out now, and it is Mara’s turn to find a loving home. She is now a playful, curious, active young cat you can watch for hours exploring the house and playing with her toys. Her very favorite activity is chasing a feather toy on a long string until she literally drops. Being previously semi-feral, she is a little slow to warm up to people. But, with little patience and love, she has learned to play and sleep in our laps. She has even made peace with our Rat Terrier after a lot of mutual suspicion. The only household member she hasn’t been able to win over is our old cat, a somewhat crotchety old rescue who is afraid the newcomer will take over. So we just have to find her a great home.
